CHULA VISTA –Christian High sophomore quarterback Kaleb Runkle rushed for two touchdowns and passed for two touchdowns in his varsity debut as the Patriots crushed Chula Vista, 30-2, in a non-league contest on Friday night.

Runkle passed for 134 yards on 12-of-17 through the air, while also rushing for 70 yards.

The road win was impressive as the teams were rated relatively close in the computer rankings.

Christian’s Tavin Zawacki recorded a sack for a safety with 4:05 left in the first quarter for a 2-0 Christian High advantage.

Chula Vista (4-2) also had a safety in the first half when Christian botched a snap with two minutes to go before halftime.

Runkle pass to Brady Eads with a short connection which Eads turned into a 44-yard touchdown with just under three minutes left in the first quarter.

Christian (3-2) took a 16-2 lead as Runkle scored on a 4-yard run on fourth down with 3:23 left in the third quarter.

Christian High’s Roman Gustin, a junior, forced his second fumble of the game in the third quarter.

Runkle then threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Jake Marsh with 1:29 left in the third to give CHS a three-score lead.

Runkle capped his spectacular debut with a 45-yard touchdown run that saw him get knocked back by a defender after taking off running, but the quarterback steadied himself before sprinting to the right side and into the end zone for the final score.

Christian’s Max Turvey had an interception in the first half. He had six total tackles on the night.

Hank Houston, a junior, had eight tackles on defense, including sharing a sack with Zawacki, to go along with 57 yards rushing on three carries, and two receptions for 15 yards.
