EL CAJON — Grossmont High senior quarterback Tommy Donovan and Monte Vista senior running back Alex Villanueva put up big-time numbers on Friday night in a distinctively different fashion.

The Foothillers were able to overcome a 351-yard rushing performance by Villanueva in a 54-33 Grossmont Conference victory thanks to Donovan’s 396 yards passing and six touchdowns.

Donovan was 26-of-43 passing as Grossmont improved to 3-2. Villanueva carried 35 times for Monte Vista (2-3).

Grossmont junior receiver Noah Walker had three of the touchdown receptions, as he had seven catches for 123 yards.

Walker had the first score of the game just 2:32 into the contest on a pass from Donovan.

However, Villanueva subsequently scampered 62 yards for a score just 52 seconds after Walker’s score to make it 8-6 early.

Walker scored the Foothillers’ second touchdown on a 43-yard play, giving Grossmont a 16-6 lead.

But it was Villanueva, who is no stranger to the house, as he had a 33-yard touchdown run making it 16-13 with 4:16 left in just the first quarter.

Donovan completed a touchdown pass to Parker Vanderburgh that went for 70 yards. Vanderburgh had four receptions for 134 yards in the game.

After the Monarchs’ failed to counter with a score, Grossmont started to extend its lead when Joshua Herber, a former quarterback, had a touchdown reception. Herber had seven catches for 101 yards.

With Grossmont leading 32-13, Villanueva had a 21-yard touchdown scroe to draw the Monarchs to 32-20, then he added a 5-yard score to bring the game to within 32-26 as that is close as it would get.

Grossmont scored on a completion of 27 yards from Donovan to Walker, to increase the lead to 40-26.

Grossmont junior running back Damar Smith had a 17-yard touchdown run as the Hillers increased the lead to 46-26.

Donovan has passed for over 1,900 yards this season with 24 touchdowns in just five games.
