SAN DIEGO – The El Capitan Vaqueros turned in a stellar defensive performance to come away with a 14-6 road victory over the Montgomery Aztecs in a non-league game on Friday night.
Junior Logan Dulyea hauled in a 47-yard touchdown reception from senior quarterback Brandt Barker in the first quarter while senior Ayden Banegas had a 10-yard touchdown run to stake the Vaqueros to a 14-0 lead in the third quarter.
El Capitan defensive standouts Eric Altamirano and Lucas Garcia had 10 tackles apiece.
The Vaqueros recorded four sacks, including one from junior Brewin Ford.
Senior Evan Ortega had an interception when senior Marlon Ames hit the quarterback and the ball went forward and landed in the arms of Ortega for the play which essentially sealed the victory.
Barker was 16-of-27 for 197 yards through the air.
Banegas had 102 yards of total offense in the game, including seven receptions for 75 yards.
Senior running back Brady Joralemon carried 16 times for a team-high 69 yards for El Capitan (2-3).
Sophomore Braiden Linder has five receptions for El Capitan.
Montgomery (2-3) scored on an amazing effort by freshman quarterback Isaiah Mena-Malijn, who got knocked around and chased by the Vaquero rush before getting away to throw a 27-yard desparation pass that was caught in the end zone by Zantez Thomas.
El Capitan opens Grossmont Valley League play in its next contest on Oct. 4 at Monte Vista, the third of five consecutive road games.
