LA MESA — Helix senior Evelyn Simsuangco was crowned Homecoming Queen, but it was Highlander senior field goal kicker Aubrey Laue who got the final admiration of the crowd at Hart Stadium on Friday night

Laue booted a 27-yard field goal as time expired, lifting the Highlanders to a 23-20 win over the visiting Madison Warhawks at Arnaiz Field on Friday night.

Laue, who estimates her range to be within 42 yards, nailed the game-winner to give the Scotties their second-straight win after a pair of losses to open the season.

Helix senior Bradford Tharpe returned an interception 47 yards for a score as Helix took a 7-0 lead.

After Madison had tied the game at 7-all, Isaiah “Pablo” Jackson scored on a 1-yard touchdown run for a 14-7 lead after he rushed 30 yards down to the 1.

Jackson rushed for 147 yards, while backfield mate Jordan Lindley, a junior, had 60 yards on seven carries.

In the fourth quarter, Stevens hit Harlem Harris for a 52-yard touchdown with 8:26 to go ahead 20-17, however Madison tied the game on a field goal.

Jeremy Robinson had a key 18-yard play on a reception to take the ball into Madison territory and the Highlanders moved down to the inside the 1 before a late touchdown was nullified by a penalty.

That was fine for Laue, giving her a little room, as the standout soccer goalie came on to boot the game-winning field goal.

Junior Jeremy Davis, who spent six months in the hospital last year fighting Leukemia, led the Highlanders with 10 tackles, including six solo and a sack.
