SPRING VALLEY — The Steele Canyon Cougars’ Gavin Caha and Austin Haisch had a bit of a connection going on Friday night.
Caha and Haisch connected for 10 completions, two of which went for touchdowns as the Cougars defeated visiting El Capitan, 19-13, in a Grossmont Conference game.
Caha passed for 201 yards, 115 of which went to Haisch.
El Capitan took the lead with the first score of the game on a pass from Brandt Barker to senior Ayden Banegas.
However, Caha threw to Haisch for a 22-yard score with 18 seconds left in the first half to send the teams into halftime tied at 7-all.
In the third quarter, the Cougars took the lead after a 30-yard pass play to Nico Jara down to the 1, where Caha snuck it in for a 13-7 lead.
Barker and Banegas teamed up again, this time to tie the game at 13-all on a 14-yard touchdown pass. The point-after try was blocked.
A key play came when El Capitan was forced to punt in the fourth quarter. The punt deflected off an El Capitan blocker and was recovered by the Cougars.
Caha then connected with Haisch for the second time, as the 17-yard touchdown put the Cougars on top, 19-13, with 8:40 remianing in the game.
Steele Canyon (3-1) was led defensively by senior Marquis Gamble, who had a sack, and senior Ethen Snook, who had six tackles.
Tyree Karkaryan forced a fumbled for Steele Canyon, while senior Marquis Gamble and Stefan Raschtschenia had recoveries for the Cougs.
El Capitan (1-3) limited Steele Canyon’s strong running game to just 23 yards on 22 carries.
Senior Aaron Altamirano had six solo tackles for the Vaqueros.
Juniors Brewin Ford and Josh Vasquez had sacks for El Capitan.
Riley Jones had an interception at the goal line in the first half to terminate at Steele Canyon scoring chance.
Barker passed for 186 yards.
Banegas had 126 yards of total offense.
