Monte Vista 35, Castle Park 19

SPRING VALLEY — Scoreboard.

It’s lighting up again at Monte Vista High.

For the first time since the pandemic, the Monarchs put up back-to-back five touchdown games with a 35-19 win over the visiting Castle Park Trojans on Friday night.

Alex Villanueva, the Monarchs’ unheralded star back, rushed for 185 yards and three touchdowns.

In turn, Monte Vista scored 35 points for the second straight game. The Monarchs hadn’t scored that many points in consecutive weeks since the spring football season of 2020.

While Monte Vista was coming off a 41-35 loss to the Kearny Komets, a defeat that left the Monarchs’ stinging after holding the lead for much of that contest, the hosts made sure they would hang on against Castle Park for their first win of the season.

Dupree Flenoid, a junior, scored the first touchdown of the game for Monte Vista, as the Monarchs scored all five touchdowns on the ground.

The final touchdown came from senior Mohab Oqdeh.

 

Chula Vista 35, El Capitan 21

LAKESIDE – The Chula Vista Spartans had the El Capitan Vaqueros standing still in Lakeside on Friday night.

Chula Vista returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and never looked back in a 35-21 in over El Cap.

The defeat was a stunner to the Vaqueros but the Spartans are one of the county’s most-improved teams this season.

Still, the defeat puts El Capitan at 1-2, all three games were played at home. The Vaqueros appear scheduled to play their next five games on the road, including their first three league games of the season in October.

Chula Vista passed for over 300 yards, as the Spartans Isaac Baca threw a 53-yard TD pass for a 21-0 lead.

After the opening score of the game, the Vaqueros fumbled the ensuing kickoff.

Later, after the Spartans second score of the first quarter, El Cap got down to the 1-yard line but turned it over again.

The Vaqueros next trip into the red zone, resulted in a turnover on downs.

Barker got the Vaqueros on the scoreboard with a 9-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, El Capitan quarterback Brandt Barker threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Braiden Linder to close the Chula Vista lead to 28-14.

Brady Joralemon had a 30-yard touchdown reception from Barker for the third El Capitan touchdown, which came in the fourth quarter.

Chula Vista’s Elijah Gillespie hauled in his third touchdown pass from Baca for a 50-yard score for the final margin. Gillespie had over 200 yards receiving.

Vincent Memorial 34, El Cajon Valley 0

El Cajon Valley (0-3) is scoreless after three games this season.

Freshman quarterback Edwin Carmona had 65 yards of total offense to lead El Cajon Valley.

Junior Vave Mossman had two receptions for the Braves. He also had an interception on defense.

Senior Fabian Carmona led El Cajon Valley with 11 tackles.

El Cajon Valley defenders Daniel Felix and Janvier Kashindi had sacks.

Kashindi also forced a fumble, which was recovered by teammate Paul Marcelin, a junior.

The Scots (2-1) forced the Braves to a turnover on downs inside their own 30-yard-line three times in the fourth quarter.

The Scots also blanked Monte Vista, 21-0, in the opener for two wins over Grossmont Valley League teams.

 

Holtville 54, Mountain Empire 0

HOLTVILLE — Holtville drubbed Mountain Empire and have outscored its opponents 164-7 in three games so far this season.

The Vikings host El Cajon Valley this Friday. The Braves have been outscored, 115-0 this season.

Holtville is one of four Imperial Valley teams with undefeated records so far this season. following a 54-0 drubbing of Mountain Empire at Birger Field on Friday.

The Vikings have now won seven straight games against their former Desert League and Manzanita League foe from Pine Valley.

Mountain Empire struggled offensively without the services of leading rusher Isaac Gonzalez. The junior running back missed the game due to an injury suffered in a second-week loss to Southwest High of San Diego.

The Vikings will look to make it four straight wins to open the season when they host El Cajon Valley with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday at Birger Field in Holtville.
