ECS staff report
FLETCHER HILLS – Coming off a season when the Grossmont College women’s volleyball team was ranked No. 1 in California for the majority of the year en route to a bronze medal at the state championships, there is so much returning experience that not much bothers the Griffins.
Case-in-point: Wednesday’s (Sept. 11) non-conference comeback triumph over College of the Canyon thanks to a career performance by spiker Andrea Torres.
Known as an outside hitter from either side of the court, Torres (Otay Ranch) collected a season-best 27 kills to dominate the net.
For the second time this season, the Griffins came back from an 0-2 deficit to stun the visiting Cougars, 21-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19, 15-13.
In the fifth set, Griffins server Norma Ramirez collected four quick points for a 4-0 Grossmont lead.
Canyon bounced back to move to within 12-all, but Ramirez returned to the back line, serving for two more points on kills by Torres and Celeste Anaya.
Canyons got one point back and was serving to force overtime, but Torres took a Ramirez set to end the match.
Grossmont (7-4 overall), which extended its win streak to four, saw Torrez top her previous best total in kills by mo prebious best in kills by eight (19 twice).
The Griffins, the defending Pacific Coast Athletic Conference champions, are back in action Friday, hosting San Diego Miramar at 6 pm. in the teams’ PCAC opener.
Cuyamaca College (3-3), entering on a 3-match win streak, opens PCAC play at defending CCCAA sate champion San Diego Mesa, also Friday but at 5 p.m.
