EL CAJON — In the closest contest in the four-game history between the schools, the Valhalla Norsemen held on to nip the San Ysidro Cougars, 21-14, on Friday (Sept. 6).
The Norsemen have a budding passing combination in juniors Jackson Newman and Anderson Turner.
Newman hit Turner seven times for 126 yards, including gainers of 44 and 30 yards.
Newman was credited with 257 yards on 13-of-20 passing, including a pair of big gainers of 21 and 37 yards on discreet shovel passes to Joshua Armstrong, which were scored as runs in the boxscore. The Cougars had no idea, either, actually.
However, it was Norsemen receivers Lorenzo Matos and Paul Sako who caught touchdown passes as Valhalla held leads of 7-0 and 14-7.
Senior Marcus Mikhail rushed in from a yard out with seven minutes left in the game for the decisive touchdown.
Valhalla is 2-1 for the second consecutive season. The Norsemen clubbed the Cougars, 41-7, last season in San Ysidro.
Valhalla had 392 yards of total offense with Newman responsible for 314 yards, as he ran for 57 yards, as well.
Junior Ahmed Husaini and junior Zachary Haggar both had sacks for Valhalla.
Junior Giacomo Lupo and Husaini both had a team-high nine total tackles.
