Patriots avenge home loss to Buccaneers

2024 EAST COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL

CHRISTIAN 48, MISSION BAY 7

MISSION BAY — A certain expectation comes with being the starting quarterback at Christian High School.

Whether being named the starter at the beginning of the season, replacing an injured starter during the season, or stepping in to pick up a struggling teammate, Patriots quarterbacks have always been among the best in the area.

On Friday night against the Mission Bay Buccaneers, Christian junior quarterback Jadon Wilkens passed for 210 yards and three touchdowns as the Pats looked like a league title contender in a dominating victory from start-to-finish in a 48-7 road win.

Wilkens was 18 of 23 in the game after being named the starter for a sidelined Spencer Johnson.

Senior Jacob Morones rushed 21 times for 130 yards and two scores.

Christian High usually has a nice, complimentary running game, but the Pats have always been known as a quarterback-first offense, rather than relying on a potent running game or workhorse running back.

The offense was clicking with Wilkens and Co. despite a rough start which saw the Buccaneers return the QB’s first attempt of the game for a pick-six.

Jake Marsh, a senior, had a touchdown reception for the Patriots. He finished with four receptions for 54 yards.

Junior Roman Gustin caught a touchdown pass from Wilkens, that registered 14 yards off a shovel pass. He had four catches for 44 yards.

Sophomore Kai Rosier also had four receptions, including a touchdown catch, finishing with 35 yards.

Junior Hank Houston forced a fumble that was picked up by teamamte Max Turvey and returned for a Patriot touchdown.

Houston also had a 1-yard scoring run.

The Patriots avenged a 31-19 home loss to Mission Bay last season and improved to 2-1. Mission Bay fell to 1-2.
