East County’s newest volleyball program

EL CAJON – Everyone thinks of the Grossmont Union High School District when it comes to public school for grades 9-12, but there is one other school starting to gain notice thanks to athletics.

Although the school opened more than a decade ago, the Cajon Valley School District — known for K-8 programs — welcomes Bostonia Global Academy to the local roster.

“We’ve been open since 2012,” said Matt Sommers, who was selected to be the school’s initial “facilitator” (a/k/a, director of athletics). “They asked me to get the ball rolling, so we’re starting with girls volleyball.”

Known as the Lobos, Bostonia Global will compete in the Pioneer League of the CIF San Diego Section, a corcuit which is home to the smallest of school in San Diego and Imperial counties.

“For or first season, the school asked that we only play league games, and out first game is Tuesday *Sept. 10) night.

The Lobos will host Bonsall High, a 3-year old school located just soth of Fallbrook near the numerous horse ranches.

Bostonia Global will utilize the gymnasium at the site which formerly was Emerald Middle School, located just a few blocks north of Chase Avenue in the westside of the El Cajon valley. The first serve is slated for 4:35 p.m.

For those who remember the gymnasium, the green landscape has been replaced by the new high school colors of burgundy red and navy blue.

Sommers hails from Arcadia, near the Santa Anita Park acetrack. The student-athlete later earned his degree from Azusa Pacific University.’

Other teams in the Pioneer League include San Diego Academy (located in National City), SE&T (School for Entrepreneurship & Technology) and High Tech High-North County (San Marcos), Monarch, Health Sciences (“HSHS”; with the new nickname of the Surpents), Preuss UCSD, Cristo Bay, and King-Chavez Community (the league is subject to change).

Monday’s matches

Christian 3, Poway 0 – In a contest switched t Christian’s Ryan Center (with air conditioning), the Patriots made short work of the Poway Titans, , out-scoring the opponent by a 75-45 count in three quick sets.

The Patriots (10-6 overall) received 11 kills from senior ulia Marinesi, while junior Aophia Willett added 10, with the team combined for a mere 11 hitting errors to totally dominate the match.

Willett also led with five aces, freshman Makenna Grieshaber posted three blocks., while libero Maximé Pheasant had 20 digs.

In addition, six different players registered assists, including 19 from starting setter Kaitlyn Favela,

West Hills 3, Steele Canyon 0 — The Wolf Pack (3-5 overall) traile din the second set, 17-9, then scored 15 consecutive points to breeze past visiting Steele Canyon (3-9). At one point, the scoring run was 35-10.
