Griffins, Coyotes claim 5-set thrillers

WALNUT — Grossmont College seems to have turned ther corner on a slow start to its women’s volleyball season.

Following a split in six tournament matches, then getting whipping by Long Beach on Wednesday (Sept. 4), the Griffins bounced back at the Mt. San Antonio Tournament by taking down the host Mounties in a frantic five-set thriller on Friday (Sept. 6).

The G-House also downed Moorpark in four sets.

Against Mt. SAC, Grossmont took two of the three sets which reached extended play “overtime,” including an 18-16 decision in the final set of the marathon. the scores were 19-25, 26-24, 24-26, 25-22, 17-15 in rallying from a 2-1 deficit.

Included was a huge 24 percent spiking percentage in the tie-breaking set.

Griffins spiker Kaylin Scott, a transfer from Utah State, established a career high 14 kills, including a spike percentage of more than 38 percent — her second-best spike rate ever.

Scott (Mountain View HS, Orem, Utah) also registered four blocks, second only to Griffins freshman middle blocker Daisy (Tofili) Ekeya (Foothills Christian) with five.

In addition, Avery Banaag (Eastlake) recorded a season-best six aces with her difficult-to-pass floater serve.

In the second match, Grossmont again outlasted Moorpark in a series of “overtimes” by taking the first two sets to down the Raiders, 27-25, 26-24, 17-25, 25-22.

Next week, Grossmont will participate in the El Camino tournament in Torrance, meeting the host Warriors and College of the Canyons.

The Pacific Coast Athletic Conference opener is Friday (SSept. 13) at home against San Diego Miramar, starting at 6 p.m.

Cuyamaca

SYLMAR – After taking just a pair of sets in three matches to open the season, the Cuyamaca College Coyotes turned it around on Saturday (Sept. 7), also taking a five-set barnburner to down West L.A. at the L.A. Mission College tournament.

Just like Grossmont in its 5-set victory, the Coyotes bounced back from a 2-1 deifict to whack the Wildcats, 25-18, 23-25, 18-25, 25-11, 16-14.

Sophomore Sophie Daumen (West Hills) paced Cuyamaca (1-3) with 13 kills.

West L.A. falls to 0-2.

Elsewhere in the L.A. Mission event, Imperial Valley took down San Diego Miramar in four sets.
