Foothillers surprise Marauders on late TD

MIRA MESA — The Grossmont Foothillers scored the game’s final two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to stun the host Mira Mesa Marauders, 32-28, on Friday (Sept. 6) night.
The two-score sequence came in just a 1:41 span as the Foothillers surprised Mira Mesa with an onside kick by senior Dylan Gary which teammate Julian Garcia pounced on the ball and recovered with still 5:43 to play in the game.
Grossmont junior Gage Weichelt had an interception with 2:26 left in the fourth quarter to seal the deal on the Hillers’ second-straight win.
The Foothillers also had a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, giving them three in the first eight minutes of the final stanza.
Grossmont junior Damar Smith had a 7-yard touchdown run to pull the Foothillers to within 28-26.
Grossmont receiving star Parker Vanderburgh hauled in a 39-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Donovan for the 32-28 lead.
The Foothillers had an earlier touchdown in the fourth quarter when Noah Walker scored on a 30-yard score from Donovan.
Vanderburgh had 10 receptions for 133 yards, including an earlier touchdown from 17 yards, as well as, a two-point conversion.

Walker had 141 yards on seven catches and two scores, including a 32-yard reception from Donovan in the first quarter to lead 6-0.
Donovan was 24-of-40 for 342 yards and three touchdowns. He has 15 touchdown passes this season.
Grossmont (2-1) next faces Otay Ranch on Sept. 20.
