CARMEL HIGHLANDS – The debut of girls flag football will hit the prime time tonight (Fri., Sept. 6), when the Grossmont Foothillers travel to Manchester Stadium to meet 6th-ranked Cathedral Catholic.
The Dons not only arrange the 4 p.m. kikcoff, it will also be the first game of a girls-booys doubleheader, with the Dons football team featuring in the nightvap.
Being a frontrunner is nothing new for Grossmont.
The Hillers participated in the first official game of the season, scoring a fourth-quarter touchdown to nip visiting Calexico, 26-20, on Aug. 17.
Grossmont was also one of the main schools which participated to “powder puff” football dating back tgo the 20th Century.
Included was a historic game at Mashin Stadium against Valhalla — current Ironman performer Lindsay Neun played for the Norsemen — when the hard-hitting game became so violent, coaches and chool officials asked the players to tone it down.
They didn’t — the players were having too much fun!
Three decades later, four Grossmont Conference schools will compose the initial season. Joining Grossmont will be Santana, Steele Canyon and Steele Canyon. In the City Conference, nearby Patrick Henry will take to the gridiron,
Santana is led by Taylor Estes, a Sultans alum and a former member of the San Diego Surge, the 2012 national champions of the Women’s Football Alliance (which just signed a deal with ESPN).
Estes has been assisting the Santana boys program since 2015 (She did not answer if she is related to Santaa boys varsity head coach Tim Estes).
She started her program’s first season with a bang, holding a flag football festival at Santee Comunity Stadium.
In all, the Sultans played four ballgames in a single day, posting a 2-1-1 record.
The Sultans enter the weekend with a 5-1-1 record, one of the top marks in the CIF San Diego Section.
Grossmont stands at 2-0; Patrick Henry captured its initial game; Granite Hills is 1-1, only falling to unbeaten Hilltop; and Steele Canyon stands at 4-3 overall.
Patrick Henry is being coaches by Lonii Harper.
