No. 1 Granite Hills 56, No. 13 Mater Dei Catholic 28
CHULA VISTA – The defending San Diego Section Open Division champion Granite Hills Eagles may have wondered whether they would be in for a battle against the host Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders on Friday night.
After taking a quick 14-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game, the top-ranked team in the county soon found themselves in a wild 21-all tie in the first half.
However, the Eagles asserted their authority in a 56-28 non-league win over the 13th-ranked Crusaders to move to 2-0.
Max Turner, the Eagles superstar senior back, rushed for 180 yards and four touchdowns on 19 attempts
Sophomore quarterback Zachary Benitez passed for 273 yards and three touchdowns on 14-of-19 passing.
After Turner capped an opening touchdown drive to start the game with a 4-yard score, the Eagles’ Jayden Thomas recovered a pooch kick.
Lathan Fry caught a touchdown pass for the second-straight with a 7-yard scoring reception just three and a half minutes into the game.
The Crusaders were able to mount a first-quarter response with a touchdown drive, followed by a 94-yard interception return that stunned the Eagles and tied the game, 14-all with still three minutes left in the quarter.
Turner had a 52-yard touchdown run to put the Eagles back in front but Mater Dei tied the game on an 88-yard touchdown pass.
However, Granite Hills would score three second-quarter touchdowns to take a 42-21 lead into halftime.
After Turner scored the go-ahead touchdown early in the third quarter, the Eagles used some gadgetry to extend the lead as Kyler Oberg scored on a 65-yard reception from Fry following a lateral.
Benitez completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Brenden Lewis later in the second quarter. He also completed a 56-yard touchdown pass to Tristan Diaz in the third quarter. Lewis had six catches for 72 yards, while Diaz had three receptions for 90 yards.
No. 6 Mount Miguel 54, Rancho Buena Vista 12
SPRING VALLEY — The Mount Miguel Matadors’ computer rating still trails what the local pollsters think of the rapidly-rising club this season by a noticeable margin.
Mount Miguel improved to 2-0 with a second-straight commanding victory. The Matadors were ranked No. 6 in the local media poll heading into Week 2, but were just 15th in the official computer ratings.
However, Mount Miguel head coach Verlain Betofe says his club is not playing up to the standards the program is aiming for so far this season.
Mount Miguel junior K.J. Shields had touchdown runs of 65, 57, and 1 yards, and he also returned a kickoff down the left sideline 87 yards for a score as the Matadors improved to 2-0.
Matador junior Zane Rottier rushed for a pair of short touchdowns, while A.J. Logan added a 5-yard touchdown run and had a team-high three pass receptions.
The Matadors closed the scoring with a 55-yard interception return for a touchdown my Sha-hei Phillips.
Before the game, Mount Miguel honored former football and basketball player Reggie Hancock, who died last month at the age of 40.
