SANTANA (1-0) at SWEETWATER (0-1) — The Sultans were solid in an opening win at Canyon Hills, limiting the Rattlers to just one score in a 20-7 victory. The Red Devils swarmed Morse, 31-6, for an impressive road win, picking up where they left off last season as San Diego CIF Division V champs.
Santana defeated Sweetwater, 34-8, last season in a similar Week 2 matchup. The Red Devils started 0-4 last season.
The Sultans’ Kaedyn Hallman played in the win last season, carrying the ball three times. The senior scored all three touchdowns last week against Canyon Hills.
Sweewater runs to success behind junior Christian Corpus and senior Jacob Gonsalves. Both had touchdowns last week. The Red Devils don’t throw much, but senior Zaryan Crews hit Juan Alvarez for a touchdown pass in the win over the Tigers.
The teams met in 2019, 2021, and 2023, with the Sultans winning all three meetings… SWEETWATER, 22-21.
SOUTHWEST (San Diego) (0-1) at MOUNTAIN EMPIRE (1-0) — The RedHawks won their opener over Hamilton (Anza), 8-6, behind a fourth quarter touchdown from junior star Isaac Gonzalez. Mountain Empire prevented a late two-point conversion to hold on.
The Raiders scored 35 points in their opener but lost by 23 points despite over 300 yards through the air from sophomore quarterback Leo Holguin. Senior receiver Jordan Cretain had 10 receptions and two of Southwest’s four receiving touchdowns.
Mountain Empire has lost consecutive meetings to the Raiders. Southwest won, 20-6, at home last season in Week 2 despite 114 yards on 12 carries from Gonzalez. The RedHawks lost at home, 13-7, in the Week 2 matchup in 2022… SOUTHWEST, 21-16.
