TEMECULA – The Christian High Patriots defeated Linfield Christian, of Temecula, 22-21, in a non-league game on Saturday night.
The Patriots won by just one point but were leading by nine late in the fourth quarter when the Lions scored a late touchdown and two-point conversion.
Christian led 14-13 at halftime.
Senior Brady Eads scored all three touchdowns for the Patriots.
The hosts scored first for a 6-0 lead on a 23-yard touchdown pass.
However, Christian answered on the first play of the second quarter.
Quarterback Spencer Johnson hooked up with Eads for a 42-yard touchdown completion play and a 7-6 lead.
With 3:25 left before halftime, Johnson completed a delayed pass to Eads, who scored a 25-yard touchdown, giving the Pats a 14-6 lead.
However, the Lions would trail by just one point heading into the locker room on a 23-yard touchdown.
Christian took the lead, 20-13, on Eads’ final touchdown of the night.
However, the key points came on a two-point conversion, as Johnson fired a pass just inside the right pylon for receiver Jake Marsh, who appeared to make a juggling one-handed grab, before fully grasping the ball for a 22-14 lead.
The Lions were able to threaten with their late touchdown, which came with 3:21 remaining.
A wild two-point conversion which saw the standard 3-yard turn into a scramble that had the Linfield quarterback chased back to the 25 before he got his pass off for a completion and a one-point deficit.
When the Patriots needed a final first down, Johnson flipped the ball to Eads in Christian High’s most familiar play, and he swept to the right side and gained 15 yards to put the Patriots in victory formation.
