WICHITA, Kan. — The San Diego Stars, East County’s summer collegiate baseball team, barely missed advaning to among the final eight at the 90th National Baseball Congress World, but fell a few inches short.

After completing pool play with a 2-1 recrd the Stars nearly completed a major comeback against the Tulsaq (Okla.) Sandlot before falling, 9-7, in Thursday’s (Ag. 1) first round of single-eliminations.

Thus, the Stars, a four-time medalist at this national event over the years, finished in a tie for ninth place.

However, the Stars nearly gained a berth to the national quarterfinals.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Stars loaded the bases, then Jason Wright send a line drive to the right side which was ticketed for the gap and could’ve scored two runs to pull even or even be a wal-off winner.

However, Tulsa’ second baseman capped the contest with a leaping catch when the ball caught the webbing of his glove to cap the 3-hour, 37-minute marathon. The contest also featured an early 73-minute lightning delay at Wichiat state’s Eck Stadium.

The Stars, which saw several pitchers decline the offer to play in NBCWS competition, were able to pick-up a pitcher for the contest (tems may add up to five players upon reaching Wichita).

Unfortunately, the former NCAA Division III left-hander, who owns acareer mark of 1-11 at schools in Minnesota and Houston, failed to escape the first inning.

Lifted after nine batters, two hits, four walks and a hit batsman saw four runs score after just 0.2 innings.

For the Stars, Brady Joslyn, a former all-league performer for Granite Hills in 2017 before moving on to an NAIA college in West Virginia, drove in a pair of runs.

Nick Chasy also homered for San Diego, a solo shot which moved the Stars into position to possibly extend the ballgame.

Tulsa mounted a 6-0 after two frames, but the Stars rebounded with six runs in the sixth to trtim the deficit to 8-6.
