SOLANA BEACH — In his previous start, Santa Fe Christian School pitcher Will Marenghi finished his poorest outing of the season.
Lasting less than five innings against Coastal Academy, the senior right-hander was tagged for six runs (five earned) and seven hits, suffering his second loss in nine decisions.
On Friday (May 17), Marenghi offered the best performance of his career.
In a complete-game performance which lasted less than 90 minutes, Marneghi fired a no-hitter to defeat visiting Helix, 2-0, in the winner’s bracket semifinals of the CIF San Diego Section Division 2 champuinshupo.
Marenghi walked three Highlanders and hit a batter to avoid a perfect game, but his eight strikeouts, coupled with true hops on the all-artificial playing surface also utilized by Eagles football, madw for an extremely easy no-hitter.
Santa Fe Christian (24-6 overall) broke up a pitchers’ duel with Helix senior Antoin Simpson with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
The runs came on a pair of RBI doubles by Connor Sawyer and Marenghi.
The kone simi-bright spot for Helix was Jake Hopkins, who the Eagles avoided with a walk and struck himj with an inside fastball.
Despite the no-hitter, there is good news for Helix.
The Scotties sufferec their first loss in the double elimination phase of the tounament. They can gain a renatch with Santa Fe Christian, but only if they win Saturday’s challenger bracket final against Bonita Vista, which nipped Madison, 7-6, with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Helix, the No. 6 seed, opener the tournament with an upset of the No. 3 Baronas to open the event.
Among the uper divisions, the no-hitter is beleieved to be the first involving an East County school since 1995, when (NAME?) Bolden of Monte Vista blanked Montgomery.
