(8) Calexico, 3-2 (25-21, 25-11, 23-25, 24-26, 15-4) – In the quarterfinals at Los Coaches Creek Middle School, the defending CIF Division 5 champion Knights fumbled away a 2-0, then dominated n the tiebreaker as this season’s top seed in Division 4. In Wednesday’s (May 8, 7 p.m.) semifinals, the Knights will host Canyon Hills, which smoked Maranatha Christian in three sets.

df. (8) at La Jolla, 3-2 (18-25, 25-19, 25-17, 23=25. 15-12) – Over all first-round matches in the top five divisions, only one went five sets, with the Braves scoring a major upset of host La Jolla. The 20-20 spiking performance saw Kaden Porter  lead the match with 22 kills and 3 aces, while  M. Sarferaz  added 20.

lost to (1) at Classical, 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 25-17) – The top-seeded Caimans (a type of lizard) trailed early before rallying back in the D2 quarterfinals match held in Escondido.
