2-24 GROSSMONT COLLEGE WOMEN’S SOFTBALL
ECS staff report
FLETCHER HILLS — No one said the re-boot of Grossmont College softball would occur vernight. However, following Friday’s (Mar. 22) performance, the period of time to become a contended may be shorter than originally thought.
Following a 10-1 loss to Southwestern earlier in the month, the Griffins bounced back with perhaps their top performance of the season, topping the visitng Jaguars, 1-0.
The decision moved Grossmont to within a half-game of the Jags for third place in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference.
Hriffins pitcher Gracie Johnston (Santana HS) fired a 3-hit shutout for the victory. Johnston registered four strikeouts, but more importantly did not walk or hit a batter.
Meanwhile, Grossmont made an unearnedrun in the third inning standup for the lone marker needed by Johnston.
Left fielder Yanitza Martinez singled to lead off, moving to second base on a one-out single by KKKK Jones.
An unorthodox fielder’s choice to Southwestern register an out at third base. Grossmont countered with pinch-runner Kate Manes and Destiny Burroughs pulling off a double steal to place both runners into scoring position.
Daayzee Wong followed with a grounder to shortstop which should’ve ended the inning, but theinstead ball was booted and Munes scored.
Once the run came home, Johnston took care of the rest. She retired the final 12 batters in order, finishing with five perfect innings folloqing a leas aingle in the third.
Wong finihsed by batting 2-for-3, while Burrought slammed a double.
Southwestern pitcher Yasmine Clark was the hard-luck loser despite throwing a 5-hitter. She also struck out four without issuing a walk, but did hit a batter.
The Griffins move to 3-19 overall (2-4 PCAC). SWC fell to 14-11 (3-4 PCAC), but played a cakewalk non-confernece scheudle while Grossmont met mostly Orange County schools.
Next for Grossmont are a pait of doubleheaderds on the road, Saturday at L.A. Harbor, then Monday at Victor Valley.
Thed next home game is Wednesday (Mar. 27) against last-place San Diego City, starting at 1 p.m.
