SPRING VALLEY – The Monte Vista Monarchs took a 4-2 first-inning lead. Afterward, it was a series of zeros, including 6.1 frames of shutout ball by Monte Vista in Saturday’s (*Mar. 16) 5-2 decision over the visiting San Diego Cavers.
The big blow was a go-ahead, three-run double by Niko Heidt. The senior posted two hits, along with David Aceron and Jacob Schweizer.
Schweizer, the winning pitcher, struck out nine Cavers over five innings. Caleb Tea Jonesgarnered the save with two frames of relief.
Neither starting pitcher was ready for the morning contest, then both offenses were powerless.
The Monarchs(6-3 overall) have equaled their best start since 2019.
