Broom Provides Late-Game Heroics

LA MESA – A late grab of the lead ended up in favor of the Helix Highlanders as they came away with a 2-1 victory over the Mira Mesa Marauders on Monday afternoon in tournament action.
With the contest all tied up in the bottom of the fifth inning the Highlanders behind LaNiah Broom and her run-scoring single would break the tie.
Broom would also in the bottom of the first inning would lace a base hit and Lauren Farace who had been on base would come into score on an error by the Marauders.
Mira Mesa would score their lone run in the top of the fourth inning.
Katelyn Woodland who started for Helix would pick up the win as she allowed one run on two hits over five innings of work which saw her walk one and strike out four. Callie Christian on the other side for Mira Mesa took the loss as she allowed two runs on four hits over four and one-third innings which saw her walk five and strike out seven.
Broom at the plate led the Highlanders as she went 3-for-3.
Helix improves to 3-4 on the season while Mira Mesa falls to 3-5.
SAN MARCOS 14, Granite Hills 4 – The San Marcos Knights jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings on their way to a convincing win over the Granite Hills Eagles on Monday afternoon.
Makenna Hines of Granite Hills led the hit attack with a pair of hits of the eight on the day for the Eagles to go along with a run scored. Both Ashley Yeargin and Audrey Smale drove in a pair of runs for the Eagles.
Granite Hills falls to 3-3 on the season.
RANCHO BERNARDO 10, VALHALLA 0 (5 INN.) – Riley Carroll of Rancho Bernardo was strong in the circle as she no-hit the Valhalla Norsemen on Monday afternoon in the runaway victory.
Carroll would also receive offensive help from the entire lineup but Abigail Tripp would lead as she drove in a pair of runs including a double and scored twice.
Valhalla with the loss remains winless as they fall to 0-7 on the season.
