SANTEE — Last decade, Grossmont Conference softball teams went a composite 0-9 on a single day, mostly falling in pool play contests at the Cougar Classic in Escondido.
On Friday (March 1), it wasn’t much better at 0-5 at Kit Carson Park, yet look and see who did come through with victories:
Foothills Christian 5, The Bishop’s 4
Playing at the ASA softball complex at Town Center Community Park, Foothills Christian grabbed its season opener by out-lasting The Bishop’s School of La Jolla, 5-4.
The first three innings were wild. The visiting Knights scored twice in their initial st-bst, but the host Knights answered with four runs. In the third, The Bishop’s tied the scoe, then Foothills regained the lead in the home-half of the frame.
Finally, both pitching staffs settled down to throw shutout ball the rest of the day, including four of shutout ball by Foothills Christian pitcher Emma Romeka. The junior finished with a career-high 16 strikeouts after starting the contest with most of her five walks allowed before finding her mark.
On offense, Knights senior R. Winchester (FC) batted 2-for-4 with a two-run double, while eese Winchester posted twpo hits and scored both times.
The Bishop’s fell to 1-1 overall
Liberty Charter 12, Montgomery 5
OTAY MESA – Moments after scoring three runs in the second inning to reclaim the lead, Liberty Charter tallied eught times in the third inning to blow away host Montgomery, 12-5, in Friday’s (Mar. 1) non-league cointest.
The Lions’ Kady McHenry registered three hits to help snap a milf 2-game losing streak and move back above .500 at 3-2 overall.
In addition, Leah Urias added a two-run double., whiile Laya Montgomery also knocked home a pair for Liberty Charter. The Montgomery Aztecs fell to 3-3.
Liberty Charter returns to action Tuesday (Mar. 5) at Hoover, starting at 3:30 p.m.
