ECS staff report
MONTEREY PARK — In the school’s first on-field action n nearly four years, Grossmont College’s return in womne’s softall nearly provedf to be epic.
The Griffins scored twice in their first trip to the plater, then added to more runs in the third inning to mount a 4-1 lead. However, host East Los Angeles rallied, including a pair of runs in the bottom of the seven to secure a 5-4 walk-off victory in the first game of Friday’s (Jan. 26) non-conference doubleheader.
The host Huskies also took the nightcap, 4-1.
Grossmont had not payed a game since the COVID-19 pandemic whiped out the season on Mar. 13, 2020, with the Griffins fina; game coming on Mar. 11 against San Diego Mesa.
However, while most of California returned to action for the 2022 campaign, mismanagement by a pair of interim athletics administrators prevented the return of the program. Throw in the threat of a lawsuit by area high school coaches for a possible Title IX vioilation finally got a third director to the athletics program rolling to hasten the return of softball for the 2024 season.
Hired was new head coach Craig Fuentes, who prviously coached at Sierra College. Just like Grossmont women
s basketball coach Karen Caires, Fuentes also once served as an assistant cvoach at the University of Arizona.
The Griffins next meet Santiago Canyon Xollege of Orange on Wednesday (Jan. 31), then play their home openr the next afternoon (Thurs., Feb.1) against Cerritos, starting at 2 p.m.
