2023 EAST COUNTY GIRLS PREP VOLLEYBALL
ECS staff report
EL CAJON – El Capitan, the top seed in Division I, and Helix, the top seed in Division II, were the lone seeds to survive the Round of 16 which opens the CIF San Diego Section girls volleyball championships.
El Capitan, the six-time reigning Grossmont Hills League titlists, breezed past Classical Academy. The Vaqueros downed the Caimans in four sets.
Meanwhile, Helix posted a sweep of a rising, low-enrollment charter school, Chula Vista Learning Community Center.
Both local programs advance to this weekends quarterfinals.
The Scotties will host University City, which upset No. 8 Fallbrook. The match was moved to 5 p.m. on Friday, to be played prior to the Helix football game.
Meanwhile, the Vaq Attack will battle La Jolla on Saturday at 5 p.m. on campus at historic Foster Gym.
Every other East County school — all nine of them – were ousted in the Round of 16. Included were a pair of home teams.
No. 8 seed Steele Canyon fell in a mild upset to visiting El Centro-Central in a fifth-set tie-breaker in Division III.
However, Christian suffered a massive elimination, as the No. 3 seed Patriots were ejected from the postseason by No. 14 Mt. Carmel, 3-1 in Division II action at Ryan Center.
