MOUNT MIGUEL 52, VALHALLA 0RANCHO SAN DIEGO — The Mount Miguel Matadors tallied five touchdowns to mount a 32-0 halftime lead, romping over the Valhalla Norsemen, 52-0, in Friday’s (Sept. 29) Grossmont Valley League opener at Valhalla Stadium.
Mount Miguel (6-1 overall, 1-0 GVL) posted its third shutout of the season, The Matadors already hold the GVL for the largest blanking of an opponent at 64-0 in 2010.
For Vahalla (2-5, o-1 GVL), the 52-point knockout matched the third-largest defeat in school history.
Matthew Barton passed for 269 yards and six touchdowns.
Jeremiah Castillo had eight receptions for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Mount Miguel led l 18-0 in the second quarter when Barton had a 6-yard touchdown pass to Castillo. Moments earlier, Barton had a 39-yard pass to Castillo to the Valhalla 6.
Sophomore Parris Vernon had 127 yards of total offense, rushing for a score. Mount Miguel led 25-0 in the second quarter when Vernon caught a 14-yard touchdown from Barton.
Braylon Caldwell had an interception return for a touchdown and also had a receiving touchdown.
Mount Miguel had a 12-0 lead when Cardwell had a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown, followed by a 13-yard rushing touchdown by Vernon.
Sophomore Zane Rottier had senior Johnny Castro also had receiving touchdowns.
Brandon Arrington had a 69-yard punt return for a touchdown.
Kaiden Chambers had the touchdown for West Hills.
The defending state champion Eagles (6-0 overall, 1-0 GHL) extended their school-record winning streak to 15 victories, also taking 19-of-20 contests.
Granite Hills cinched the decision early on, tallying 28 points in the first quarter, the most by the Eagles since thumping Valhalla with more than 30 points in a Saturday special last season.
Eagles freshman quarterback Zach Benitez passed for three scores, then ran for another on a 10-yard gallop to post the early lead. They would eventually mount a 43-0 cushion before the Sultans gained a touchdown against the reserves with six minutes remaining.
Benitez has thrown for touchdowns in all six outings this season.
Also scoring on the ground for the Eagles were junior Max Turner (45 yards) and Josh Zander had six receptions for 115 yards, including a touchdown for the Eagles.
Brenden Lewis had two touchdown receptions.
Trevor Smith had a 34-yard interception return for a touchdown.
The lone points for Santana (4-2, 0-1) were registered by junior running back Wyatt Williams on a 33-yard run.
Santana (4-2, 0-1 GHL), which entered the ballgame just a few minutes shy of an undefeated record, suffered its biggest setback since falling to Christian, 48-7 in 2018.
EL CAPITAN 38, MONTE VISTA 3
LAKESIDE — Brandt Barker passed for five touchdowns and 288 yards in the Grossmont Valley League contest.
Four touchdowns were to Chance LaChappa.
El Capitan (4-2, 1-0) also got an interception from Ryder Lynn and a fumble recovery from Saxon Plasterer.
Gavin Ames had a team-high nine tackles for ECHS.
PT. LOMA 24, CHRISTIAN 13
EL CAJON — The Pointers, under head coach Joel Allen and new quarterback, nephew Brady Allen, won at Valley Stadium over the host Patriots.
Point Loma interception Christian (4-3, 0-1) four times on the night and led 14-7 at halftime.
Three of the picks came in the second half.
Christian’s Dylan Eads scored an 11-yard touchdown receiving and also had an interception.
Brady Eads scored Christian’s first touchdown on a 6-yard pass from Spencer Johnson.
The Braves (4-2 overall) saw their 4-game winning streak snapped, ending the school’s longest string of win victories since opening the 2017 season with a 5-0 mark. The Vikings are also 4-2 after taking the inaugural meeting with any Grossmont Conference school.
The Vikings used a diversified offense against El Cajon, getting rushing touchdowns from junior Hector Sanchez (8 yards) and his brother Bradyn Terrill (1-yard), Both are juniors.
Meanwhile, Holtville quarterback Alonso Cuevas connected with Raul Briseno and Alan Carrillo on passes of 20 and 10 yards respectively. All three are sophomores.
ECVHS opens Grossmont Valley League action Friday (Oct. 6) at Monte Vista starting at 7 p.m.
