2023 EAST COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL
HELIX 30, RED MOUNTAIN (Ariz.) 22
SAN DIEGO – Experience is paying off for the Helix Highlanders.
The Scotties’ veteran-laden lineup had a big day in one of the biggest games of their lives.
Sure, while the Highlanders may go on and even compete for a championship this season, members of the Helix football team will always remember their participation in this annual special series of football games held each year.
Eighth-ranked Helix defeated Red Mountain, of Arizona, 30-22, in the Honor Bowl on Saturday at Cathedral Catholic High.
Helix senior linebacker Jirah Savaiinaea forced a fumble inside the 3-yard line, which was recovered by senior Kevin Allen III in the end zone for the early lead.
Allen III also scored on a 3-yard run in the second quarter. He finished with 25 carries for 157 yards and earned game MVP honors from the Honor Bowl organizers. Both of his parents are in the military.
Helix’s defense had five sacks and limited Red Mountain to 181 yards.
Helix senior quarterback Ryland Jessee, a Utah State commit, finished 18-for-24 for 180 yards and two touchdown passes
Helix (3-0) improved to 3-0 after building a 21-0 first-half lead.
Jackson Daniels had a touchdown reception of 46 yards and caught seven passes for 100 yards.
Game sealed for Helix. Ryland Jessee connects with Gordon Meredith for the 17-yard touchdown. The 2-point try fails.
