CAJON – Granite Hills slugging star Sofia Mujica helped power the Eagles to a big 7-3 victory over the Bonita Vista Barons in Tuesday’s (Apr. 4) non-league action.
Trailing 1-0 after the first half-inning, the host Eagles would gain momentum when Mujica (2-4, 2 R, 4 RBI, 2 HR) tied the game at 1-1 with a solo blast deep to center field for her sixth dinger of the season.
Granite would really push the momentum even further an inning later thanks to a Baron’s error that allowed Kaleigh Bauer (1-2, R, RBI) to score, followed by Mujica playing the déjà vu card when she belted a home run to center field. This time, it was a 3-run variety blast for her seventh on the season to push the advantage to 5-1.
Later, the Eagles would tack on another pair of runs courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Audrey Smale (RBI) that was deep enough for Mikayla Tileia (2-3, R, 2B) to tag up from third, and Bauer followed up with an RBI single that scored Kamryn Flath (2-3, R, R).
The Barons who could only muster a single run up until late in the contest would score two runs in the top of the seventh to make it 7-3.
For the Barons, Natalie Gonzalez took the loss as she only lasted two innings allowing five runs on five hits, Danica Aboytes would finish the game going five innings allowing two runs on four hits while striking out three.
Peyton Wells would get the starting nod for the Eagles, she would also pick up the complete game seven-inning victory. On the day she would allow three runs on six hits while striking out two.
The win by the Eagles improves their record to 9-2 on the season and gives them a leg up for playoff purposes as Bonita Vista falls to 6-4-1 and will be a contender for either the Open Division of a high seed in Division I.
Mujicas’ two home runs on the day would not only push her to retake the lead in East County but also in San Diego as well. Another note is her two home runs were her 38th and 39th of her career which puts her tied for second overall in CIF San Diego Section history with Paige Dimler of Rancho Buena Vista who also hit 39 for her career from 2018-21.
Santana 3, Helix 1
SANTEE – The Santana Sultans made their six hits on the day count which included a late run for insurance purposes to claim the victory over the Helix Highlanders in Grossmont Hills league action on Tuesday (Apr.4).
Despite allowing six hits on the day Santana Sultan’s starter Aurelia Dawson would only allow one runner to score for the Helix Highlanders which came in the top of the first inning.
The lone run for the Highlanders was set up by a lead-off walk by Lauren Farace (1-2, R) who would advance to third on a one-out single by LaNiah Broom (1-3) and would come into score on a ground out by Kamryn Evans (RBI).
The momentum for the Highlanders would be short-lived as Delaney Smith (1-4, R, RBI) would drive in Sara Spry (1-4, R) and an RBI single by Anabella Heguy (1-2, RBI) that scored Smith which would give the Sultans a 2-1 lead.
Later in the bottom of the sixth inning Taylinn Warren (2-4, RBI) would add insurance for the Sultans as she drove in Vanessa Ryan on a single to left field.
