ECS staff report
JAMUL Sometimes you to be lucky; sometimes you need to be good.
In the case of Steele Canyon pitcher Branden Jackel, his fate has been in both categories, but more in the talented side.
Like many, many schools in the East County this spring, as least one game per week seems to get postponed/cancelled due to the weather or wet grounds. Well, not only has Jackel been able to to take the mound for each scheduled start, he’s also won each time out.
On Monday Mar. 20), Jackel ran his record to an East County-best 4-0 on the season after firing a massive 1-hut shutout against the visiting Madison Warhawks, 2-0.
Jackel was dominant over his six innings, setting a Grossmont Conference season-best with 11 strike outs. The senior faced just three batters above the minimum, yielding just a single and a pair of walks.
Junior Greyson Tamborski entered to pitcher the seventh, posting a 1-2-3 inning tyo complete the 1-hit shutout of Madison (3-5 overall).Steele Canyon is now 5-4.
All of the offense cameinthe second, when Steele Canyon scored against Warhawks pitcher Lawson Minshew, who stopped Helix last week in a shutout win.
The runs were drivien in by senior Tommy Molina and sophomore Azyel Castro.
Caleb Entrekin scored on the hit by Castro, who then came home on Entrekin’s basehit.
Steele Canyon goes to powerful Eastlake (7-1) on Wednesday., then enter Grossmont Hills League action next week.
Valhalla 8, Clairemont 0
RANCHO SAN DIEGO – Valhalla High sophomore Anthony Ibrahim, who was barely a blip on the Norsemen radar a year ago, ran his record to 3-0 by firing a 2-hit shutout against the visiting Clairemont Chieftains in an 8-0 decision on Monday (Mar. 20).
It was the third shutout of the campaign by Norsemen pitching. The others were against Madison and San Diego.
The Norsemen tallied three times in the first and fifth innings. No other team or individual statistics were posted.
Valhalla(6-1 overall) goes to Morse on Wednesday to meet the Tigers. The hapless Clairemont Chieftaisn fell to 1-8.
