EVANSTON, Ill. — Feeling trapped while stuck in your residence because of the rain.
Don’t stay fenced in — here’ a look at the UC San Diego fencing team, which just completed the regular season with a strong showing — both women’s and men’s teams — at the Northwestern University Dual competition.
The Tritons will next head to Stanford for the NCAA West Regional and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships.
On guard
The Northwestern Duals is considered a grueling marathon, but UC San Diego came out near the top of thw two-day competition which covered 14 rounds against 20 teams among 11 schools.
On the women’s side, UC San Diego posted a 7-4 team record, while the men did even better at 7-2.
Women
Facing Northwestern, OSU, Boston College, Wayne State, Notre Dame, Temple, Farleigh Dickinson, Denison, Lawrence, Detroit, and CSU, the Tritons posted seven victories and four defeats over 14 rounds of competition.
The epee squad made up of Renee Zuhars, Bella Balogh, Samantha Sayson, Tean Brooks, and Mia Wu went 9-2. Alyssa De La Cruz, Joanne Luong, Emily Luo, Rafaella Gomes, and Kyra Wu represented foil, going 6-5. The saber squad went 6-5 with the team made up of Roxane Cayrat, Janna Aboudaher, Zara Fearns, Sarah Shen, and Maya Desai.
Mia Wu led the women’s side with a 15-3 record.

Men
The men’s squad joined the strips with Boston College, OSU, Notre Dame, Wayne State, UIW, Lawrence, Cleveland, Stanford, and Detroit Mercy. Facing 14 rounds of competition, the Tritons took seven victories and two defeats.
The epee squad of Derek Rong, Milan Rona, Vedran Markota, Isaac Ive, and Sunny Sharma went undefeated with nine victories, topping Notre Dame, OSU, and Stanford. Posting a 5-4 record, Shawn Kim, Daniel Noble, Phileas Auray, and Jerry Pan represented saber. The foil squad made up of Scott Lao, Larry Song, Lucas Zeng, Rishi Ranadive, and Brandon Kim went 6-3.
Derek Rong led the Tritons with a 20-1 record.
