CALEXICO – El Capitan senior Ava Gall made a long journey to the Imperial Valley feel a whole lot shorter on the way home.
Gall, a four-year varsity performer, belted a solo, tie-breaker home run in the seventh inning Thursday (Feb. 23), leading the Vaqueros to a 4-3 triumph over the Calexico Bulldogs. Gall (2-4, R, RBI, HR) broke a 3-3 deadlock with a clutch leadoff drive over the fence in center field in the 4-3 victory.
El Capitan is unbeaten in the early going at 2-0, both coming on the road. It was the season opener for Calexico, which has now dropped four straight to the Vaqueros since 2016.
The Bulldogs though would lead early on by a score of 2-0 behind an RBI triple and single but the Vaqueros would cut the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning.
Reese Danzak (2-3, R, 2 RBI, 2B) would drive in Addison Leone (1-1, 2 R, 3B) who led off the inning with a triple, and later in the inning Alyssa Fierro (1-3, RBI) singled to right field that brought home Danzak to cut the deficit 3-2.
Danzak would later drive in Leone to tie the game up in the top of the third inning on a lined double to center-field.
El Capitan would out-hit the Bulldogs, 10-4, in the contest as Gall, Danzak, and Kylee Frazier each had a pair of hits.
Pitching-wise for the Vaqueros, Makenna Burton would pick up the victory coming into relief as she finished things out going 6.2 innings in which she allowed one hit while striking out three, Shelby Vars who started allowed three runs in her third of an inning of work.
