ECS staff report
DEL SUR – Following a difficult schedule over the first half of the girls volleyball schedule, the Helix Highlanders were 6-10 overall and stranded in the middle of the Grossmont Hills League standings.
However, following a 7-1 run to close the regular season, the Scotties not only gained a share of second place in the GHL — only behind CIF Division I semifinalist El Capitan — the Scotties swept four straight postseason matches, capped by a four-set decision over top-seeded Holtville to claim the CIFSDS Division III championship.
The third-seeded Scotties raced through Valley Center and Canyon Hills in sweeps to advance to the Final Four, then posted a mild upset of second-seeded Foothills Christian in the semifinals.
In the final, Helix took the first set, dropped the second set in a tie-breaker, then dominated the final two sets to win by scores of 25-21, 24-26, 25-11, 25-21. in a match held at Westview High.
Helix finishes with an overall record of 17-11, The Vikings, the undefeated titlist in the Imperial Valley League (8-0), finishes at 26-7.
In addition, Helix captured the inaugural Grossmont League boys beach volleyball crown two weeks ago, advancing to the club division (non-CIF) Final Four by defeating Sage Creek before falling to Poway.
