No. 5 Helix 42, Grossmont 17 — Ryland Jessee, a junior, tied a Helix record with six touchdown passes, equaling the mark set by Alex Smith in 2001 against Monte Vista in a CIF D-II semifinal playoff game that the Highlanders won, 61-28.
Helix defeated the winless Foothillers for the 27th consecutive time extending back to 1991.
The Highlanders’ Quincy Herron had TD receptions of 12 and 30 yards, while teammate Jackson Daniels hauled in scores of 5 and 15 yards.
Freshman Brandon Arrington had a 65-yard TD on a pass from Jessee.
Jessee finished with 304 yards passing on the night.
Herron had seven receptions for 148 yards, including a third touchdown reception.
Junior Jason Sisneros rushed for 101 yards on just four carries.
Junior Isaac Aceves scored a short rushing touchdown in the third quarter for Grossmont, which trailed just 7-3 early but was down 35-3 at halftime.
Nolan Kelly caught a short touchdown pass from Hudson Herber for the Foothillers with 17 seconds left in the game.
Helix improved to 7-2 (2-0) and will host Granite Hills for the Grossmont Hills League championship next Friday.
No. 7 Granite Hills 34, Steele Canyon 0 — Pablo Jackson threw a 10-yard TD pass to QB Parlan Sanders on a halfback screen, while Maxwell Turner had a 36-yard TD run for Granite Hills (7-2, 2-0) for a 14-0 halftime lead.
Sanders added TDs in the second half on keepers of 9 and 30 yards, while Jackson scored a TD on a 2-yard run.
Easton Peterson had an interception for Granite Hills, his seventh of the season, while teammate Davion Green also had an interception.
El Capitan 38, Monte Vista 0 — Julian May had an 86-yard TD run for El Capitan (7-2, 5-0), which can win the Grossmont Valley League title outright with a win next Friday at home against West Hills.
Brandt Barker hit Chance LaChappa for a 64-yard bomb for a TD.
The pair connected on a second touchdown pass, as well, as LaChappa had seven receptions for 149 yards.
Manuel Vicencio and Benecio Castillo both had a sack for the Vaqueros.
Barker finished with 160 passing yards. He also rushed for a touchdown.
Michael Segovia also rushed for a touchdown for El Cap.
Gavin Ames and May both had four solo tackles for the Vaqueros.
Austin Cordeiro forced a Monte Vista fumble, which was recovered by Dominic Denha.
Aden Ramirez kicked a 25-yard field goal.
Mount Miguel 48, Valhalla 14 — Matthew Barton passed for 195 yards and 5 TDs for Mount Miguel, which finished the regular season 4-6, 2-4.
Jeremiah Castillo had four TD receptions, while Chris Akridge had the other scoring catch.
Castillo has scored 21 touchdowns this season for the Matadors, who are likely headed to the Division IV playoffs. He finished the regular season with 66 receptions for 1,189 yards.
Antrell Burbidge rushed for a pair of TDs for the Matadors.
Classical Academy 42, Mountain Empire 7 — The Caimans won the Pacific League over the host RedHawks behind Life Pollard two rushing TDs and one passing TD.
