EL CAJON (6-4-22) – Another season is in the books for high school softball and quite a season it was as there were some surprises and a couple of grueling league finishes as well.
Just about every team made their respective divisional playoffs with a couple of deep runs including the Granite Hills Eagles who got hot late and would go on to win the Division II CIFSDS Championship for the first time since 2008 as they beat the higher-seeded Poway Titans, 8-4. This season was under a new coach which made the feat even more spectacular.
League-wise, both both Grossmont Conference circuits were exhausting and competitive and in the end, both sides ended up with co-champions: the Grossmont Hills was shared by El Capitan and Helix at 8-2; the Grossmont Valley was a deadlock among Valhalla and West Hills at 7-1.
Player-wise, this player really came up big again for her team and as a sophomore could have had a typical sophomore slump but instead, she once again put up breaking numbers and that player is catcher Sofia Mujica of Granite Hills.
Mujica really came up big again this year as she set the table for her teammates.
As one of the more feared batters in the section, Mujica was walked 31 times and despite that high number which led CIFSDS, she also belted 15 home runs which were only behind the 17 she hit as a freshman. Those 15 homers not only topped East County but also tied for the top in all of San Diego.
Mujica also finished the season with a .469 batting average which was second in the league by 14 points. Mujica kept her momentum going from her freshman campaign and will look to really enter into the San Diego Section CIF record book in her final two seasons — she is currently tied for third (first in East County) in career home runs with 32.
On the pitching side, this player really stood out as she was the best pitcher in the county and the section, and that is why Sophia Ramuno has earned Pitcher of The Year for the second consecutive season.
On the year, Ramuno finished with a record of 18-6 and an ERA of 1.36 that would see her finish with 257 strikeouts in 165.1 innings. Those numbers were the best not only in the East County, but in the upper echelon of San Diego as well.
One of the big highlights of the season for Ramuno was against El Capitan back in late April when she went over the 500 strikeout plateau. For her career, she finishes with 589 strikeouts which are only second to the 672 by Amy Lopez (1993-96) who set the mark for the Highlanders.
On the coaching side, once again every team was prepared and brought the conference back to the forefront of the toughest league discussion in San Diego, especially the Hills side. However, in the end, one really stood out and that is why they were tabbed East County Coach of The Year.
First-year coach at Granite Hills, Michelle Miller guided the Eagles thru their grueling season and despite a 4-6 league record and a third-place finish the Eagles pulled off a major victory with about a week to go in the regular season as they defeated Helix by a score of 1-0. That victory really shot the Eagles in the rankings as they would earn the No. 4 seed in Division II. They would use that momentum in the playoffs and despite losing to Helix 2-0 in the playoffs they would come out of the losers bracket and beat the Highlanders in the second game of the semi-finals and go on to beat Poway for the Division II championship. They would then be awarded the top seed in the Regional playoffs where they would finish their season in the semi-finals. Despite that loss, the Eagles would finish a tremendous season at 20-13-1.
