EL CAJON — The Grossmont High coaching career for baseball skipper Jordan Abruzzo has just been granted an extension.
After being a participant in the inaugural CIF Southern California regional championships last season, on Sunday (May 29), the Hillers gained another entry in ’22. However, they received a tough route to the championship.
Grossmont (15-18-1 overall), the CIF Division I runner-up to Eastlake, has been seeded No. 6 for the regional and will travel to mee the t third-seed La Quinta Blackhawks (25-7) in the quarterfinals.
All round-of-8 games will be held Tuesday (May 31) at 4 p.m. Admission will be charged.
La Quinta (Palm Springs area) captured the CIF Southern Section’s Desert Empire League with a perfect 15-0 mark.
Abruzzo’s thoughts:
“We are excited to go play. Our kids are proud to go represent Grossmont High School and represent East County Baseball.”
“I think any chance you get to go compete in something like this you have to be excited. It’s another chance for our kids to go prove they can play”.
The Foothillers are represented by senior Barron Zamora ,who has committed ti play ball at Washington next season as the lone player to officially sign so far.
Fly, Eagles, fly
Meanwhile, Granite Hills (24-6) the Grossmont Hills League titlist and the No. 2 overall ballclub out of the San Diego Section following an extra-inning setback to La Costa Canyon in the final, has been seeded No. 8 among the eight ballclubs.
The Eagles will travel to meet top-seed Junipero Serra Catholic of San Juan Capistrano. The Lions (23-10) placed second in the Trinity League behind Orange Lutheran, a team which narrowly clipped Grossmont in the ’21 Southland regional first round, 2-1, last season.
