Division 1
Steele Canyon 7, Scripps Ranch 3
RANCHO SAN DIEGO — Steele Canyon right fielder Taylor Corella demonstrated that teammate Tommy Molina isn’t the only member of the Cougars with some pop in his bat.
Corella, a senior, demonstrated his power-hitting ability by pumping a home run and a pair of doubles for a season-high eight total bases, fueling 3rd-seeded Steele Canyon past 11th-seeded Scripps Ranch in Wednesday’s (May 18) CIFSDS Division I playoff action.
The triumph advances the Cougars (14-14 overall) into the winner’s bracket semifinal at 2nd-seeded Eastlake. The Titans (18-9), the defending CIF Open Division titlist, crushed Carlsbad, 6-1.
Corella’s first double came in the first inning when Steele Canyon tallied four times for a quick 4-1 start.
Weston Clark’s RBI single tied the contest, then a sacrifice fly by Ray Marrero gave the Cougars the lead for keeps.
Corella added his solo homer down the left-field line towards the “Great Wall of Jamul” in the third inning then posted his second double to drive in a run in the fifth.
Cougars winning pitcher Gabe Diaz struck out nine Falcons batters over his six innings. Cannon Restine pitched a 1-2-3 in the seventh.
Division 2
Del Norte 3, Patrick Henry 0
4-S RANCH — Del Norte junior pitcher Chris DiPrima fired a 1-hit shutout, leading the Nighthawks past Patrick Henry, 3-0, in Wednesday’s (May 18) Division II contest.
DiPrima struck out 11 Patriots batters and walked three. DiPrima also drove in two of Del Norte’s three runs.
The lone hit for Patrick Henry (22-8 overall) was a triple by Nolan Kluge, but he was stranded.
Meanwhile, Patriots’ hard-luck losing pitcher Talin Gardini, a sophomore, only yielded four hits, falling one batter short of a complete game.
Patrick Henry, seeded sixth, faces an elimination game on Friday, hosting seventh-seeded Mission Hills (21-9) of San Marcos.
