LAKESIDE (4-21-22) – All tied up at 2-2 the El Capitan Vaqueros (16-5, 3-0 GHL) would win in dramatic fashion as Dominique Garcia (1-3, RBI) with one out would come away on a six-pitch at-bat with a single to center field to drive in Addi Leone (RUN) for the dramatic game-winning run to beat the Steele Canyon Cougars (12-9-1, 1-3 GHL) 3-2 on Thursday afternoon in Grossmont Hills action.
With both sides pitching strong runs wouldn’t come easily but the Cougars were able to take an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
After a leadoff double by Jazmin Williams, the next batter Allyson Haessly (1-4, R, RBI) would knock her in with a double to center field, and later in the inning Isabella Azevedo (2-2, RBI) would drive in Haessly to make it 2-0.
Despite a two-out triple in the top of the second by Isabella Smith (1-2, 3B) the Cougars couldn’t add to their lead as Brooke Horn was able to retire the next batter to end the inning.
However, the Vaqueros would with two outs mount a rally as Horn would drive in Hailey Mulligan (1-3, R) and Aubrey Thorne (2-3, RBI) followed with an RBI single that scored Leone to tie the game up at 2-2.
Steele Canyon would threaten in the top of the sixth inning with one out as Breanna Lakin (2-3) singled which was followed by a walk by Gabrielle Ortega Alves but once again Horn would get out of the inning as she struck out the next batter and retired the third out on a flyout.
After shutting down the Cougars in the top of the seventh inning the Vaqueros started their half of the seventh with a base hit by Peyton Wells (1-3) followed by a base hit by Jojo Christiaens (2-3), Leone would come into run for Wells who would score the game-winning run.
Shellstrom took the loss for the Cougars as she allowed three runs on ten hits over six and a third innings in which she struck out three.
On the other side, Horn picked up the complete-game victory in which she allowed two runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out four.
Santana 4, Grossmont 3
SANTEE(4-21-22) – Trailing 3-1 late in the contest the Santana Sultans (10-10, 2-2 GHL) were able to rally and hold off the visiting Grossmont Foothillers (11-9, 0-4) on Thursday afternoon in Grossmont Hills action.
The Sultans early on would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Jordyn Beatty homered over the left-field fence with two outs for her second home run of the season.
But the slim lead wouldn’t last as the Foothillers would strike back in the top of the third inning thanks to Jenna Ennis who would drive in Ashley Beard with a double to left field to tie the game up which was followed by a two-run home run by Jade Daley to give them a 3-1 lead.
Caitlyn Potts for the Foothillers with a two-run lead was cruising along until the Sultans finally were able to get something going.
Lead batter Taylinn Warren would triple and would come into score when Samantha Sullivan followed with a base hit to right field to pull within 3-2, a couple of batters later Kassidy Harper would give the Sultans the lead with one as she homered over the left-field fence for a two-run shot and allow the Sultans to re-take the lead 4-3.
New Sultans pitcher Aurelia Dawson would come into the game in the top of the seventh inning and retire the Foothillers in order to procure the victory for the Sultans.
