LAKESIDE (3-26-22) – The El Capitan Vaqueros used a pair of three-run innings to drop the visiting Mira Mesa Marauders, 8-0, in non-league action on Saturday. It was the team’s second straight shutout of the week after earlier blanking Otay Ranch.
An error by the Marauders off a hit ball by Jojo Christiaens (1-4, 2R, 2 RBI, 2B) allowed Alyssa Fierro (2-4, 2R, 2 2B) to come in and score to make it 1-0, Ava Gall (3-3, R, 3 RBI, 2B, HR) would come up to the plate and belt her fourth home run of the season over the right-field fence to extend the lead to 3-0.
Still leading 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth the Vaqueros with two-outs would add to their lead when Christiaens doubled in both Fierro and Dominique Garcia (2R, SB) to make it 5-0, a couple of batters later Christiaens would come into score when the Marauders uncorked a wild pitch.
El Capitan would add another run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Zoey Rosales (RBI) hit a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Maddie Taylor (2-4, R, 2 SB) to tag up from third and race home to make it 7-0. They would tack on another run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Gall knocked in Garcia on a base hit to center field which made it 8-0.
Picking up her second win of the season was Peyton Wells as she allowed zero runs on three hits while striking out nine on the day over her seven innings of work to earn the complete-game victory.
With the victory over the Marauders the Vaqueros record moves to 9-4 and they have now won five games in a row and will have one more tune-up before starting league play on Tuesday.
El Capitan’s final non-league tune-up will be a short road trip to Santee to take on the West Hills Wolf Pack in a 4 PM start time on Monday, Mar 28, and then on Tuesday, March 29 they start Grossmont Hills league play on the road against Granite Hills also slated for a 4 PM start time.
