CHULA VISTA (3-22-22) – With pitching strong on both sides, the El Capitan Vaqueros managed to push across two late runs to come away with the 2-0 victory over the Otay Ranch Mustangs in Tuesday’s non-league game,
El Capitan led by Brooke Horn in the circle was able to slow down the Mustangs offense who came into the contest averaging a little more than five runs a contest as she limited them to four hits on the day.
Offensively, the Vaqueros had five hits but a pair of those hits would come in the top of the sixth with two outs. With two outs Dominique Garcia (1-3, R) would hit a fly ball to left field for a base hit which was followed by a ball hit by Hailey Mulligan (1-3, R, RBI) to right field that allowed Garcia to race around the bases and come into score giving them a 1-0 lead. Still, with two outs and Mulligan on first base, she would proceed to steal second.
Now with Mulligan on second base courtesy of the stolen base, Ava Gall would hit a ball that would be misplayed by the Mustangs and in the process, Mulligan would take advantage and come into score extending the lead to 2-0.
Otay Ranch would put runners on in the bottom of the inning with a lead-off hit by a pitch and a couple of batters later a walk but Horn would settle down and retire the next couple of batters to end the threat and inning.
Later in the bottom of the seventh inning, Horn would retire the first two Mustang batters before giving up a base hit but ultimately it wouldn’t matter as she would get the next batter to ground out to end the game.
Also, contributing on the day for the Vaqueros were Maddie Taylor who went 2-for-3 including a double, and Jojo Christiaens who went 1-for-3.
Horn for her efforts garnered the win with seven solid innings in which she allowed zero runs on four hits while walking one and striking out two on the day.
This was the second victory for the Vaqueros over the Mustangs as they defeated them in another tight contest back on March 12 by a score of 2-1.
The win now improves the Vaqueros record to 8-4 overall.
