STEELE CANYON 3, RAMONA 1
By Adam Paul
SPRING VALLEY (2-17-22) – Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning Gabrielle Ortega Alves (1-2, 2 RBI, 2B) on a 1-1 count would take the next offering and sliced a lined ball to left field that would allow both Breanna Lakin (1-3, R) and Isabella Azevedo (RUN) to race around and score to give the Steele Canyon Cougars a 2-1 lead.
Steele Canyon still leading by a run in the bottom of the fifth inning would tack on an insurance run when Allyson Haessly (1-3, RBI, 2B) with two outs smashed a ball to center field allowing Jazmin Williams to come around from second base and score to extend the lead to 3-1.
The three runs scored by the Cougars’ offense would be all they needed as both Emma Shellstrom and Davina Moya combined to shut down the Ramona offense the rest of the way for the victory.
Haywood for the Bulldogs despite going the distance and striking out five on the day took the loss as she allowed 3 runs on 4 hits.
For the Cougars, Shellstrom who picked up the win went 4 innings while only allowing a run on 2 hits and fanning 6 on the day, Moya who would finish things off tossed three innings of shutout ball allowing no hits, and struck out 3 on the day.
Next up for the Steele Canyon Cougars will be the Patrick Henry Patriots who last season made it to the semi-finals of the CIF Open Division playoffs. That contest will be tomorrow February 18th.
