EL CAJON (1-5-2022) — After a tough loss against Monte Vista, and a win over the Santana Sultans, as with most teams in the Grossmont Conference, the Granite Hills Eagles had a chance to heal up and get back to work.
A close trip down Madison Ave. to face the El Cajon Valley Braves is always a must-see contest, no matter what the records are.
Heading into this one between the Granite Hills Eagles (10-3) and the ECV Braves (9-9), it is really a much better Braves team on the court than their record reports.
For the Eagles, three standout players came out of this contest, as this was another one of those games that are utilized by the Eagles to sharpen up their plays not so typically used, and to work on their defensive skills, as well.
Talk about a lights-out performance by Lawond Zagana, he made 6-of-10 field goals and 4-of-8 free throws, along with 12 rebounds and a pair of blocked shots for a total of 16 points.
Austin Holt was 6-for-11 from the field and 1-of-2 at the line, to go along with three rebounds, four assists, two steals, and 15 total points. Zach Burton, the third of the three musketeers, was 2-for-3 from the field and 4-of-6 from the line, with four rebounds and eight total points, along with some tremendously played defense.
One of the younger Eagles, sophomore Isaiah Hasten, should always be recognized. All you have to do is attend a few minutes of his live play, a huge burst of energy every time out.
Hasten was 4-of-6 from the field, with nine rebounds, three steals, and once again, a Superman on defense. Hasten is gonna continue to get better, maybe eventually, breaking some defensive records.
Granite is definitely ready for league play, and a great tune-up prior to the start of the league.
The Eagles (11-3) will face the Mountain Miguel Matadors (4-10) at Granite Hills on Friday, Jan. 1, at 7 p.m.
