GRANITE HILLS 88, CASTLE PARK 19
EastCountySports.com staff report
EL CAJON – Former Granite Hills High scoring champion Nick Taylor decided to stop by the Eagles’ gym on Thursday night to check out this year’s team.
By the time the 2005-06 East County Player of the Year left, his school-record single-game scoring mark had been broken.
Granite Hills senior Tre Edmond scored a school-record 54 points in the Eagles’ 88-19 victory over obviously overmatched Castle Park on Thursday night.
Edmond broke the Granite Hills record which was previously held by Taylor, who scored 53 points in a 98-36 win against Sweetwater in 2005.
Edmond became one of only four Grossmont Conference athletes to score at least 54 points in a game, joining local legends Kemmy Burgess (El Cajon Valley), Beau Sager (Valhalla), and Tony Clark (Valhalla).
The mark equals the fourth-highest single-game point total by a Grossmont Conference player behind Burgess’ conference-record 59 points against Parker in 1998.
Sager, whose 57 points against Granite Hills in 1994 isn’t listed in the section record book, has the second-highest single-game conference total, while Clark, still making headlines as the current executive director of the Major League Baseball Players’ Association, had 55 twice with the Norsemen in the 1989-90 season.
Izzy Wagner’s 54 points for Mount Miguel against Rancho Bernardo in 2012 might be the most impressive of all the high marks, considering it came in a 74-72 victory, while Burgess also had a 54-point effort against Monte Vista in ’98.
There was no let-up in these Eagles, who also nearly had a school record-setting defensive performance against the Trojans.
The 19 points allowed was reportedly the second-lowest total by an opponent in school history.
Edmond scored all of his points in the first three quarters. He also had seven rebounds, seven steals, and four assists.
Edmond was 22-of-39 from the field, including 9-of-19 from three-point range.
“Tre mixed in a very good shooting night against a relatively soft zone and made the most of it,” Granite Hills head coach Dan Duffy said.
The other 13 Eagles who attempted shots combined for 43 total attempts.
By Comparison, Taylor, in his high game in ’05, made 12 three-point field goals. Taylor finished with a scoring average of 27 points per game, leading the Eagles to the Grossmont South League title that season.
“It’s a great feeling and I definitely could not have done it without my teammates who continued to feed me the ball,” Edmond said. “At halftime, I was told I needed about 20 more points so it took even more concentration to get it.”
When Edmond reached the scoring mark, he was removed from the game to the applause of his teammates, as well as, the crowd, including obviously, Taylor, who posed for a picture worthy of the Eagles’ Hall of Fame following the game.
Edmond’s brother, Derek, has seven points, including a three-pointer, and three assists, while another teammate, Isaiah Hasten, had six points and four assists.
“Our whole team was supportive and giving him the ball,” Derek said. “It was great watching my brother break the record.”
The Eagles improved to 6-1.
