EL CAJON (12-2-2021) – Ahhh… what a relief it must be for RedHawks head coach Bernard Vann.
He had Corey Vann back in the mix and off his crutches in the Monday matchup versus Southern California Yeshiva, however, the last missing component, still 4,200 miles away enjoying time with the family.
It looked to be smiling faces with the entire team from Pine Valley to see the final puzzle piece in place, Lukas Spencer, who just like Corey Vann, is very important to the football and basketball squads.
The RedHawks have had quite an interesting schedule in comparison to the typical teams they face every fall for football.
They hosted the Chula Vista Learning Community Charter Cobras, definitely a mouthful.
It was the first game of the season for the Cobras, as the RedHawks came into the battle (1-1.
The visitors were coming in from a pretty competitive Sierra League out of the South Bay, with Horizon Prep leading the pack at 4-0.
It figured to be a pretty decent matchup.
Mountain Empire got comfortable, played at a decent pace, and appeared to be calm and focused on the task at hand.
The hosts wasted no time putting up shots, playing decent at the boards, and ending the first quarter rather quickly, 15-7. Leading the way in points for the RedHawks, Albin Acevedo with three buckets and two of three free throws.
Spencer came alive in the second quarter and let his presence be felt by CVLCC,
Hitting four buckets for eight points, and a few rebounds, looked like he may have had a little personal practice while on vacation. Once again, Mountain Empire outscored the Cobras, 15-4, also playing solid defense as a team, leaving the score, 30-11 RedHawks.
Stranger things have happened, but after a fantastic play on defense and offense, the hosts were shut out completely by the Cobra defense, while adding 10 points in the third quarter, and now only down nine points, the Redhawks were in need of a decent offense and to create turnovers and pad their lead with a few buckets.
Indeed, that is exactly what took place, a few key rebounds, blocks, and steals, along with stellar offensive play from Acevedo with a beauty of a three-point swish along with a pair of buckets, and his fresh off vacation teammate, Lukas Spencer with 3 key buckets, and an all-around great team win.
Also, according to only recent records found at the school athletic program, for the moment, Spencer tied the school record with two former RedHawks with 14 rebounds on the evening.
What a phenomenal evening for Spencer and his RedHawk teammates, with the win, 43-28.
Up next for Mountain Empire (2-2) will be as a road team, to face the Borrego Springs Rams (0-4) at 7 p.m. This will be the second meeting for the two teams on this young season.
