2021 COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOOTBALL
By Dave Dickens

CHULA VISTA (11-08-2021) – As the COVID-19 pandemic took many lives globally, infected countless, and not only shut down several businesses, but also public schools, those who
suffered especially were the community colleges.
From academics to shutting down all athletic programs, especially at Southwestern Community College in Chula Vista, the school president felt it was necessary to assist in controlling the virus from spreading into an already highly-infected region in San Diego County, the South Bay.
The leaders at the federal and state level knew this would possibly be the highest infected region as so many had come seeking asylum and wanting medical help, as many even came in boats from neighboring countries.
The bottom line, the virus was on the rise in Chula Vista, as well. However, while the community was trying to avoid the spread, online schooling was the only learning available in 2020, which meant fewer tuition dollars taken in, as many courses at the college are hands-on.
Taking even a bigger hit was the athletic department.
As we all know, a lot of the income generated for the athletic departments comes from fundraising dollars, hosting SDSCIF football playoff games, and the most popular event for the
football program, in particular, Recruitment Night, hosted by the football department.
So here’s the deal, folks.
All seniors that will be graduating in 2022, slap on that playoff football jersey, and head on down to DeVore Stadium on Saturday night. For a lot of folks, especially in the East County this last week, only four teams were ousted in the first round.
Anyhow, slap on your school jersey, invite mom and/or dad, and you will be in for a real treat.
Players and their parents get into the stadium free and get a tour of the field and facilities at Southwestern College.
The event will be hosted by college personnel and coaches. This portion of the event will begin at 4 p.m.
Although for parking, it is suggested you arrive at least 30-45 minutes before the tour begins.
Also, you will be treated to a nice spread of great food courtesy of Southwestern Football.
And the cherry on top is a free community college football game between the host Southwestern Jaguars and the visiting San Diego Mesa Olympians, two rivals that will definitely be bringing their best.
The kick-off is at 6 p.m. (CaliFoto Network will be streaming the game live on YouTube for those of you unable to attend the contest.
Remember that masks are required.
The extra bonus will also be able to see a legendary Head Coach with over 200 career wins at the high school and community college level, with 90 wins at Southwestern.
Carberry also led the Monte Vista Monarchs to 100 career victories and will be coaching across the field from one of his former players, now the head coach for the Olympians, Gary Watkins.
“One of the biggest accomplishments is the 300 scholarships given to our past student-athletes,” Coach Carberry added of the success in his 15 years at Southwestern College. “When the players take over the team, that is when something magical happens.”
