EastCountySports.com staff report
SPRING VALLEY – Fairmont Prep defeated Mount Miguel, 61-37, in the Division 1-A playoffs at Monte Vista High on Tuesday.
But it didn’t appear that would be the case if the first half was any indication of things to come.
The Matadors battled back from an early 9-2 deficit to the Huskies to take a 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Jennifer Moreno, Ixchel Rojo, Arantxa Fonseca, and Zanna Hurst led a balanced scoring rally.
Fairmont, however, quickly scored the first nine points of the quarter, taking just three minutes to retake the lead.
But Las Matadoras were up to the task to once again get back into the game by halftime.
Mount Miguel was back to within four just a minute later midway through the second quarter.
Then, Jacquee Brown had a steal and went the length of the floor to score to make it a two-point game with just under four to play before the half.
Finally, Moreno tied the contest with just under three minutes to go in the second.
Fairmont led just 21-20 at halftime.
The Huskies would score the first nine points of the second half just three minutes in to take a 10-point advantage.
Fairmont led 42-28 at the end of three quarters.
Mia Yamamoto led Fairmont Prep (17-7) with 22 points.
Mount Miguel, which was the No. 2 seed and considered the home team, finished 19-6.
The game was played at Monte Vista as the Mount Miguel gym was scheduled for renovations at the end of the school year.
Fairmont Prep will travel to face Rosary on Thursday in the semifinals.
The Huskies lost to Long Beach Poly in the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs.
Rosary (18-5) finished the regular season in second place in the Trinity League and fell to Esperanza in a CIF-SS Division 1 semifinal.
The Huskies have not played Rosary since 2018 in the Mark Keppel tournament. Rosary won that game, 74-59.
