SPRING VALLEY – The Monte Vista Monarchs rallied to win their meeting with the Olympian Eagles on Saturday, 49-45, as head coach Mike Tulley of the Monarchs, and his counterpart, Marty Ellis of the Eagles, got their teams together on the court once again.

The duo played together at Monte Vista High in the early 90s and have matched their teams regularly over the last several years, although the clubs didn’t meet last season.

The teams played another low-scoring game when matched up. Five years ago, the Eagles won by nearly an identical score.

The Monarch team that the coaches played on, including Monte Vista’s awesome 1992 club that made it to the CIF finals, would sometimes score 50 points in one half – much less in a full game.

Tully’s son, Brandon, helped lead the Monarchs on Saturday night with 12 points, while teammate Isaiah Hilke turned in another strong game with 12 points, as well.

Monte Vista trailed, 25-24, at halftime but the Eagles extended the lead to 39-30 entering the fourth quarter.

Tully made a pair of three-pointers in the fourth quarter to get his team to the finish line.

“Our team is playing hard through the whole game,” said the coach’s son. “Every game, we are locked into the game plan and we play hard.”

Hilke had a pair of field goals in the fourth, as well, as Monte Vista won for the fifth consecutive game.

“Brandon’s threes and forcing some turnovers gave us the energy to comeback,” Hilke said. “We are ready to face Mount Miguel. Riding this winning streak, as have improved from last time we played them.”

The meeting between the Spring Valley rivals on Friday at the Monarchs’ gym will be a key game in determining the Grossmont Valley League championship.

When Ellis was the top star as a junior for the Monarchs on that ’92 team, he was averaging over 20 points per game.

Monte Vista ended up scoring 19 points in the fourth quarter to win over Olympian on Saturday.

Cameron McKan made a three-pointer in the fourth quarter for the Monarchs.

Deron Whitley added eight points for MVHS.

Chris Lybarger also canned a three for Monte Vista.
