Highlanders tackle Hillers on hardwood

LA MESA – Helix High sophomore Ahkwon White made two of his four three-pointers in the third quarter when the Highlanders outscored the Grossmont Foothillers, 19-8, to take a 15-point lead into the fourth and the Scotties went on to defeat the Hillers, 63-46, at Caledonian Gym.

White finished with a team-high 14 points as Helix improved to 1-1 in Grossmont Hills League play.

Isaiah Thomas added 12 points for the Highlanders, seven of which came in the opening period, as Helix led 14-9 after one. Thomas led the Scots with 14 rebounds and five steals.

Helix’s Markees Williams scored five of his 11 points in the decisive third quarter, as the Scotties extended a 28-24 halftime lead. He contributed seven assists.

Bona O’Quinn had a pair of baskets in the fourth quarter and finished the game with 11 points and six rebounds.

Darnell Clady added nine points and five rebounds for Helix.

Grossmont fell to 8-4 overall.

Junior Aaron Velasco led Grossmont with 11 points.

Junior River Elliott added nine points for the Hillers.

Freshman Elijah Williams finished with eight points for GHS.

 

GROSSMONT 59, EL CAJON VALLEY 41 – On Saturday, the Foothillers downed the Braves thanks in large part to a 17-0 third-quarter dominance.

Jonathan Towne scored 15 points for the Foothillers.

Aaron Velasco made a trio of three-pointers on the way to 13 points for the Hillers.

Trenton Giles added 12 points, including a pair of three-pointers for GHS. He scored seven points in the decisive third period.

El Cajon Valley junior Allen Freeman made four three-pointers in the first half, as the Braves trailed just 33-29 at halftime.

Jayden Barnett added 11 points for El Cajon Valley.

 

SAN DIEGO 75 CHRISTIAN 55 – The Cavers downed the Patriots on Saturday.

Shawn Jackson-Ascura led the Pats with 15 points.

Junior Nelson contributed 12 points for CHS, knocking down three three-pointers.

Guard Patrick Perez scored all 11 of his points in the second half for the Patriots.

Hunter Provience finished with eight points for Christian.

 

MONTE VISTA 55, SANTANA 52 – On Friday, the Monarchs knocked off the Sultans in a Grossmont Valley League contest to improve to 1-1 in league play.

 

LIBERTY 80, HORIZON PREP 51 – Liberty’s Lions beat the Lions of Horizon Prep, of Rancho Santa Fe, on Thursday.

Liberty led 37-19 at halftime.

 

THE CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL 51, MOUNTAIN EMPIRE 35 – The RedHawks were defeated on Thursday despite 10 points each from senior Dakota Daniels and sophomore Trey Moore.

 

STEELE CANYON 59, MONTE VISTA 43 – On Wednesday, the Cougars evened their record to 6-6 overall with the conference road win over the Monarchs.

Steele Canyon led 34-12 at halftime.

 

MONTE VISTA 52, HIGH TECH SAN DIEGO 43 – The Monarchs picked up a non-league win on Saturday against the visiting Storm.

The win was Monte Vista’s third of the season.

 

ORANGE GLEN 64, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 47 – The Knights outscored the eight-ranked Patriots, 31-30, in the second half in a league game on Saturday.
