2021 EAST COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL
EL CAPITAN 28, VALHALLA 6
EastCountySports.com staff report
EL CAJON – The El Capitan Vaqueros defeated the Valhalla Norsemen, 28-6, in the season finale of the 2021 spring football season.
For El Capitan, the short season ended up being too short.
After dropping its first three games, the Vaqueros finished on a three-game winning streak.
It was appropriate that El Cap played in the season finale during this remarkable season.
The Vaqueros helped usher in the return to youth sports locally with their traditional run up down Maine Ave. just a couple of months ago.
The defenses dominated in the first half of this one.
El Capitan recorded an interception in the first quarter.
The Vaqueros led 7-0 at halftime on a scoop-and-score following a blocked punt with 3:10 left in the second quarter.
On the third play of the second half, El Capitan scored on a 58-yard touchdown to take a 14-0 lead.
The Vaqueros scored with just over two minutes left in the third quarter on a short run by senior Taylor Grasmick.
El Capitan held Valhalla scoreless on a pair of red-zone tries late in the third quarter.
Valhalla scored on a 5-yard play with 8:47 to go in the game.
Valhalla passed for 145 yards with senior quarterback Luke Pillsbury and junior quarterback Tommy Logan, as the pair platooned throughout the evening.
Pillsbury rushed for a team-high 57 yards.
Miles Thompson caught four passes for 82 yards as Valhalla’s leading receiving threat on the evening.
Senior Marsalis Childs had three receptions for 55 yards for the Norsemen.
The Norsemen knocked on the doorstep of the goal line in the first half following a 59-yard pass from Logan to Tomlinson but El Capitan intercepted a pass at its own 1.
Valhalla had three sacks, including ones from seniors Noble Bromann and Samer Faraj. Bromann also forced and recovered a fumble.
Valhalla senior Gavin Nagel defended a pair of passes.
