Tuesday’s games
MONTE VISTA 59, EL CAJON VALLEY 42 – These teams have had a good rivalry over the last few years but it was the Monarchs getting the best of the Braves on Tuesday night.
Right now, the Monarchs remain hot, winning seven of their first eight games to open the season.
Meadow Delino led the Monarchs with 21 points, including three three-pointers. She came out hot in the first quarter with two threes and 10 points as Monte Vista jumped out to a 21-9 lead.
Lina DeLeon finished things up in the fourth quarter when she hit a three-pointer and scored eight of her 13 points in the final stanza.
Micayaah Flournoy, a junior, had a three-pointer in the first quarter and ended with nine points for the Monarchs.
Monte Vista had won six in a row before losing to Eastlake last time out.
“The loss was frustrating and at that moment, we lost our cool,” said Monte Vista starter Saniya Raley. “But we’re just very passionate about what we do and we want to teach each other as teammates to play our absolute best.”
Monte Vista led in this one 34-18 at halftime.
“We were able to force El Cajon to make some bad passes which set up our teammates for easy buckets,” Raley said.
The Braves whittled the lead in the third to 43-34 before the Monarchs put it away in the fourth.
“I want to contribute to our team as much as possible and I do that with my pressure on the defensive end,” Raley said. “Keilani (Polite) is a great defender for us, as well. She is extremely fast and has incredible endurance.”
Sophomore Aniah Deloatch led the Braves with 14 points. She also had five rebounds and three steals.
Sophomore Ruth Taulanga had 11 for El Cajon Valley in the scoring department and 11 in the rebounding department, as well.
SERRA 55, VALHALLA 21 – The visitors from Tierrasanta won the nonleague contest on Tuesday.
Valhalla fell to 0-3.
