ENCINITAS – A big fifth inning by the Valhalla Norsemen really put the game away as they ran away from the San Dieguito Mustangs, 15-3, on Monday (Apr. 5).
Valhalla (2-3) would get the scoring going in the top of the first inning thanks to an RBI single by Abby Johnston (2-2, 2R, RBI) to make it 1-0.
The next batter, McKayla Fish (1-3, R, RBI), would hit a ground ball out but in the process, Cadyn Ruffer (2-2, 2R) scored which made it 2-0.
On the very next play Devyn Ruffer (2-2, 2R, 2 RBI, 2B) knocked in Johnston with a double to right field, and Aubrey Baker (2-3, R, 2 RBI) finished things off with an RBI single.
Trailing in the bottom of the second inning the Mustangs (1-3) would take advantage of multiple walks which would lead to a run to cut the Norsemen lead down to 4-1.
However, it wouldn’t take long for Valhalla to answer back as Maryn Jordan (1-3, 2R, RBI) knocked in Ruffer to make it 5-1.
Later in the inning, Johnston scored on a sacrifice fly and Jordan came in to score on a Mustangs error.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Norsemen really broke the game wide open as they would score eight runs.
Starting with a leadoff hit by Nayeli Chapa (2-2, R, 2 RBI), followed by a single by Fish and a single by Ruffer to load the bases, the next batter, Baker, would drive in Chapa.
Emily Van Der Zalm (1-1, R, RBI) followed with an RBI single.
An error on a hit ball by Aubrielle McKee (R, RBI) led to Ruffer coming in to score which made it 10-1. Valhalla would actually bat around in the inning in which Chapa who started the inning off would drive in McKee.
Fish in her five innings of work picked up the victory in which she only allowed one run on three hits while walking four and striking out eight on the day.
